Identify potential 'showstoppers'

Identifying any potential ‘showstoppers’ pre-merger allows you to pursue strategies to mitigate their impact during the merger process and consider alternative ways of working with the other organisation or delaying major changes to organisational structure.

Merger discussions are often precipitated by a crisis within the organisation (for example, internal conflict, a public relations issue, withdrawal of funding from a major donor, rapid and unsustainable growth etc.). You or your merger partner may not wish to continue with the merger after a crisis is revealed. Importantly for you, if you are in crisis during the initial approach, it may weaken your negotiating position and impact whether you are able to apply sufficient resources to the merger.
